Vogel State Park – One Of Georgia’s Oldest And Finest Parks – Blairsville Georgia

said on August 15th, 2012 filed under: What To Do

Vogel State Park, located 11 miles south of Blairsville off Highway 19 in the North Georgia Mountains, is Georgia’s second oldest park built in 1931.  This 233 acre beauty, that rests at the base of Blood Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest, is also one of the most popular of Georgia’s parks.

Vogel is full of beautiful streams, a waterfall, four hiking trails as well as a 22 acre lake called, Lake Trahlyta.  Plenty of fishing and swimming can be done at this lake as well as your family can enjoy the mountain view beach setting.

The four hiking trails are as follows:  The Coosa Backcountry Trail is a 12.5 mile strenuous trail for the serious hiker.  The Long Bear Hair Gap Trail begins and ends in Vogel and is a 4 mile moderate in difficulty hike.   There is a 1 mile Trahylta Lake Loop trail and a half a mile long Nature trail.  These last two trails would be good for children and those that would enjoy a leisurely hike.

No matter what your interests are, each member of your family should find something they enjoy at Vogel.  There are cottages as well as campsites to rent at Vogel.  While you are there enjoying the beautiful scenery, you will also be able to choose various activities such as miniature golf, pedal boat and kayaking, bike rentals, geocaching, a playground, fishing, lake swimming and you can even plan a wedding and have it here in this amazing North Georgia Mountain setting!

For all the history lovers, there is a museum located at Vogel that demonstrates through various exhibits how this park is rich in history, with many facilities being constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corp during our nation’s Great Depression.  The “CCC Boys” story is told in the park’s museum.

Last but not least, Vogel State Park offers various annual events that will sure to keep the tourist delighted as well as the current residents coming back for something new all the time.  Some of the events include,  the spring wildflower walk, kids fishing rodeo, July 4th bicycle parade and flag raising, Mountain Music and Arts and Crafts festival (happening September 8th, 2012), Fall hoedown and the Christmas Tree Lighting, just to name a few. Hope to see you all at the festival in September!
