Summer is rapidly coming to an end but I still believe there are several weeks to squeeze in some amazing North Georgia Mountain warm weather activities. Hiking to waterfalls is one of the top rated family outings in my opinion. There are many waterfalls surrounding our beautiful countryside. I recently wrote about Fall Branch Falls in Blue Ridge and wanted to highlight one in Blairsville as well. Helton Creek Falls, located close to Vogel State Park, is truly a sight to behold.
I believe most people would be able to enjoy this walk without it being too strenuous. There are some roots and wood steps but with careful walking, this should be a fairly easy .2 mile hike.
The lower fall drops over a 30 foot ledge tumbling into a pool below. There is a nice flat rock area to have a picnic or even to sit while little ones are in the swimming hole. However, if you’re like me, you want to play in the swimming hole too!! When we went, even in the summer, it was a little chilly due to not much sunlight hitting this area. It was a wonderful way to cool off though! You can bring your pet to this area as well for some swimming play time! There is a second upper falls that is very tall and drops approximately 60 feet. It is an absolutely beautiful view as you can stand on the observation deck and admire another one of God’s amazing creations.
To get to this fabulous place, you can take US 19/129 south for 11.5 miles. Turn left on the first road past the entrance to Vogel State Park. Go 2.2 miles to a small pullout parking area. Trail will be on the right as indicated. You could even go to Vogel State Park and then Helton Falls in a day. I hope you get to visit this great place and make more memories with your special loved ones the way I have. I believe every child should have the opportunity to see a waterfall through their young eyes. It is something they will never forget….oh, and once again…it’s FREE.
