Meeks Park – One Of Blairsville’s Many “Pride & Joys”
Meeks Park, located one mile west of Blairsville off 515, is one of the most beautiful parks to visit when you are in the North Georgia Mountains. Butternut Creek and Nottely River run through Meeks creating multiple places that are ideal to picnic. The Union County Recreation Center does an impressive job at keeping this park maintained and full of fun and activities for the family.
Some of the many functions that take place throughout the year include, The Butternut Creek Arts and Crafts Festival, the father daughter dance, an annual Easter egg hunt, and hometown Halloween on the square. These are just to name a few!!
In addition to the frequent family events, Meeks features seven ball fields (which are kept busy by all the athletics offered through the recreation center), 4 batting cages, a nice playground, basketball and tennis courts, several pavilions, a skateboard park and walking trails. On the other side of 515, which is also the park, you will find a dog park and a disc golf course.
My kids enjoyed the playground that consists of slides, tunnels, and ladders! We swam in the nice clean pool that is now open on weekends from 12 to 6…only a few more weeks to enjoy this facility that will allow you to rent out for a pool party as well. You can also rent a pavilion for a minimal fee to enjoy a covered area with a grill. What a great idea for a family reunion at the end of the summer. I have no doubt that many of your friends and family would love to see the beautiful town of Blairsville.
One of the things that excited me the most about Meeks Park was the 4.62 miles of walking trails. Lots of nature can be seen in these trails and you get to enjoy the beautiful outdoors while exercising all at the same time. I absolutely love the indoor walking track in Blue Ridge, but while it is still warm, I am diversifying my exercise plan and enjoying any outdoor trails as well. Meeks being one of my favorite!
After your family has enjoyed the variety that this park has to offer, go on the other side of 515 and check out the disc golf course! I did not know what this sport was about but found it quite an interesting game. It is similar to golf but you take a flying disc and try to land it into a basket. Some advantages to this over golfing is that it doesn’t require a greens fee, you don’t need to rent a cart, nor do you get stuck with a bad tee time. If you are thinking about taking up a new hobby, this is something you may want to check out. It is economical as well.
Also while visiting the park, I noticed all the older kids enjoying the FREE skateboard area. My son’s eyes widened and said this is something he would want to do one day…gives me another FUN and FREE idea for later…Once again, I smile and get excited about all of the great things offered in the North Georgia Mountains.
