Amicalola Falls State Park – Another Mountain Masterpiece
Amicalola Falls, was the name given to the tallest cascade in the southeast by the Cherokee Indians years ago. The name means “tumbling waters.” What a sight of tumbling waters it is! If you are staying anywhere in the North Georgia Mountains, I highly encourage you to visit this 729 foot monstrosity located at 418 Amiacolola State Park Rd in Dawsonville, Georgia.
The park is made up of 829 acres which includes over 12 miles of hiking trails at all skill levels. If you are a serious hiker, you may choose to join the Canyon Climbers Club. However, if you are seeking easier trails, there are plenty available. You may choose to climb a challenging trail with staircases to see this beauty. However, they offer other options of viewing as well. Whichever option you choose, I can assure you that you will be glad you came to see this amazing waterfall view.
One of the things I enjoy most about Amicalola is the many choices of activities they offer at this park year round. There is a visitor center when you come in that you must check out. It is full of stuffed, as well as live animals. There are always park rangers available to answer any questions you may have. We received a presentation on all the wildlife that has been seen at the park. From there, we chose to go with the ranger to take an art class on how to make beautiful pictures using leaves found in the park! After we enjoyed this, we climbed the staircase to see the waterfall which would have been worth the visit alone if that is all we had had time for. However, the day continued to walking trails, playing on the playground, splashing in the creek for hours and ending the day by listening to blue grass music being played by multiple talented people. All of this for just $5 to park!
If you prefer to make this park visit more than a day trip, there are various accommodations here as well. A beautiful mountain top lodge or if you are more of the rustic type, there is a campground and cottages as well. There is also a 5 mile hike you may choose to take and when you are finished, you can stay at the Lan Foote Hike Inn. There is also a mountain top restaurant full of spectacular views.
The following is a list of activities that will coming up at the park that may interest you. I guarantee whatever you choose to do, you will make a day or weekend full of memories in the beautiful North Georgia Mountains!
